Caritas International Belgium

Who are we:

Caritas International Belgium is a Non Governmental Organisation, member of Caritas Internationalis, a confederation of 162 Catholic relief, development and social service organisations working to build a better world, especially for the poor and oppressed, in over 200 countries and territories. What makes Caritas network unique is its ongoing presence in communities, before, during and after crisis situations. In Belgium, Caritas was founded in 1932 in order to centralise the catholic health and social initiatives for the poor. The first international action of our new born organisation was to shelter Basque children following the civil war in Spain. In 1949, Caritas started to support the refugees in Belgium. Soon afterwards our organisation began international assistance at the time of emergencies. In parallel, we supported micro-projects which, in time, also evolved into supports of structural programmes of development around the topic of food security, mainly in the Great Lakes region in Africa.

The Department of International Cooperation:

In 2006, Caritas International Belgium was running or supporting projects in 57 countries, on the five continents for a total of about 10 million euros. Most of our activities are implemented by our local partners. Indeed, Caritas International Belgium develops and nurtures partnerships (subsidiarity principle) in priority with the local Caritas organisations. For long term involvement, Caritas International Belgium focuses on food security. Through its activities in that sector, Caritas Belgium aims also to consolidate the link between Relief, Rehabilitation and Development in order to improve the sustainability of its Relief and Rehabilitation interventions, and also to prevent food crisis or other disasters and to strengthen the resilience of the targeted communities (Disaster Risk Reduction / Preparedness). Further Caritas Belgium is always attentive to the following crosscutting issues: gender, participation, conflict sensitivity (Do not Harm), HIV/AIDS and environment. Caritas Belgium is particularly concerned with environment and climatic issues since it is widely recognised that climate change is, and will become more of a cause of disasters with increasing magnitude and intensity (floods, droughts, cyclones…). Therefore, environmentally friendly approaches are fostered in all the projects, especially in the food security projects.

Our Vision:

We wish for a world where peace, justice and solidarity reign. As long as there are wars, catastrophes and poverty, we wish that their victims are listened to and helped to rebuild their lives and restore their dignity. We think that every person must have access to food, drinking water and shelter. We also believe that everyone should be able to earn a living and should have access to healthcare and education. We think that resources and wealth must be distributed between the nations in a humanistic concern and the prospect for a sustainable development. It is illusory to think that a country or an organization can solve global problems. Only joining forces will make it possible to have long-term solutions.

Our mission:

Caritas International Belgium assists the victims of wars, natural disasters, migration and poverty. Whether the victims are taking refuge or are disaster victims in their own country, we provide material as well as nonmaterial assistance. This assistance is done without distinction of nationality, gender, religious or philosophical convictions and political affiliation. Our only criteria: to support and reinforce the most vulnerable among the poorest in line with what the Gospel teaches us. The objective is to enable them to become actors of their own development. In case of international crises, we take part in relief and rehabilitation programmes initiated by the Caritas international network. In countries known as L.A.C. (the Least Advanced Countries), we initiate food security programmes enabling the most vulnerable people to (re)start their livelihood. In Belgium, we assist the refugees and other migrants who have recently arrived and we organise accommodation for them. We also seek human and structural solutions for the problems faced by the asylum seekers.

Our priorities:

·Humanitarian aid throughout the world.

·Reconstruction and rehabilitation programmes including disaster risk reduction components.

·Food security programmes.
