SIMAVI

Simavi is a public health organisation that believes everyone has a right to good health. This is why we work on people's health in the poorest regions of developing countries. We focus specifically on the health of mothers, as they are the key to their family's health. Together with them we take care of safe drinking water and sufficient hygiene, healthy pregnancies and children's health. We also provide mothers with the knowledge they need to prevent diseases. Together with local organisations we offer direct and practical support. And we stand up for the interest of people. This works. For more than 85 years.

Although the Indonesian government gives money directly to poor households, many areas located further away in NTT, Moluccas and particularly Papua lag behind and poverty is greatest there.

The poor infrastructure and the distance from the economic centre on Java have in these areas resulted in extremely high prices for daily necessities and the poorer provision of healthcare services. But poverty also exists on Java.

Improved sanitation

Access to sanitation and safe drinking water is greatly lagging behind in rural areas of Indonesia and a mere third makes use of improved sanitation. In April 2010, Simavi started the SHAW programme (Sanitation, Hygiene And Water) in poor areas in eastern Indonesia. In four years' time, improved health by a change in mindset should be possible for 150,000 households.

Cooperation

The programme will be carried out by the Indonesian organisations Rumsram, CD Bethesta, YDD and Plan Indonesia, under the guidance of Simavi. They also cooperate with the Dutch organisations IRC and WASTE and with UNICEF and the Indonesian Ministry of Planning.

The majority of the funding will come from the Dutch Embassy in Jakarta. Funds will have to be raised for parts of the programme.
