Hotel Bayview Gardens

We want to be as eco-friendly as possible in these third world - circumstances. That has an extensive history and is a long-time plan, because it means measurements and investments we're not able to realize all yet. But from the money that comes in, at least 10% goes into investments in the eco-structure.

We want to combine the hotel with a self-supporting farm as far as possible, to serve eko-meat, vegetables and fruit.

What did we realize until now?

1. We recycle most of the garbage: what's eatable goes to pigs, chickens, cats and dogs. The chicken we servegrew up here. We take care only a minimum is eaten by rats, cockroaches and ants.

2. What's biological and the animals don't eat turns into compost, together with green waste from the garden, the dirt of the animals and the chopped wood from the carpenter. The compost goesinto the garden, it turns into vegetables, spices, fruit, flowers and anything you see here on this originally barren and infertile hill. We don't use other fertilizers or pesticides. Now and than (more and more) fruit and vegetables come from our own garden.

3. The other waste we split and give it the best purpose in the given circumstances: non-recyclable glass goes into our cement-foundations and floors, pet-bottles are gathered by local people for a second use or to sell it to recycling factories in Java, old metals and cans are also collected by locals to sell it again. In the end, what's left (mostly plastics) we wanted to burn in a high-temperature incinerator, but people convinced me, that that still pollutes too much, so now we put it in garbage bags which are collected by the local authorities. We reduced the use of Aqua-bottles. In the hotel-rooms and restaurant we use refillable gallons.

4. Because the lack of water is a problem in Labuan Bajo, we collect all the rainwater from the roofs. We have a total storage-capacity of 250.000 liters.

5. All the waste water goes to the garden, after filtering, physical and biological treatment.Only in this grey water system we already invested ten to fifteen thousand Euros and still it smells.

6. In the kitchen we mostly use wood: what's left by the carpenter and the fast-growing wood we cut on the wild places of our land and our neighbor's and that grows again fast. Carbon-neutral cooking.

7. All our stones we dig ourselves on our land. No transport-energy and less use of cement. All the walls and floors, roads etc. here consist for 50% out of these stones. We built all apartments inside the hill, isolated the roofs, created shade and so prevent the sun from heating up your apartment.

8. Our garden terraces make sure that the rainwater that comes in, stays in the ground in stead of eroding the hillside.

9. We still use too much electricity and that means we are dependent of the local provider, who makes electricity without any concern about the environment. Solar panels for electricity is no option yet (increases the price per KWH 5 to 10 times).

10. Our first step will be to heat the water for the showers of the new bungalows nr. 8 and9with sun-energy.The other rooms will later get the same system.

11. With the samesimple system the laundry will bewashed in sun-heated water and our own (notyour) drinking water gets pre-heated before boiling it.

12. Another future step will be to use the organic waste not only to make compost, but also to makebiogas for the kitchen.
