Swisscontact

Swisscontact is a Zürich based organization founded in 1959 by members of the Swiss private sector and academia for sustainable development cooperation. Our aim is to contribute to poverty alleviation by promoting economic and social development in selected developing countries.

We create opportunities through a self-help approach aiming towards long term impact by engaging both public and private players. The private sector initiatives are a focus of our work as it is a requirement for sustainable poverty alleviation. We facilitate sustainable change in social, economic and ecological development in Asia, Africa, Latin America and Eastern Europe. We provide consultancy services in collaboration with local partners to enable people to improve their vocational skills, competencies, economic conditions and access to markets.

We believe in sustainable development through promoting vocational training, workforce development and continuing education; supporting small and medium-sized enterprise and minimizing environmental impact.

Swisscontact aims to contribute to improved standards of living in Indonesia since 1972. We do this by promoting equitable access to economic participation for all parts of society through a more enabling environment for private sector development and by encouraging more ecologically-sensitive practices in the urban environment. Swisscontact always seeks to facilitate sustainable local solutions to local problems.

Considering the development and income disparities in Indonesia, Swisscontact focuses on less developed areas. Two projects in Flores NTT, the Local Economic Development LED-NTT and the eco-tourism project WISATA are implemented under this strategy.

The Regional Tourism Development project (WISATA) - 2009-2013, covers Flores, an island in the Indonesian province of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). The project aims at building up an effective tourism destination management to strengthen the competitiveness of Flores as Tourism Destination, ensuring a sustainable flow of tourists and creating economic benefits for the local communities. With 5000 people working in the tourism businesses as the direct beneficiaries, WISATA works closely together with the local private sectors, communities and the 8 local district governments.

The project WISATA is a bilateral cooperation between the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (MTCE) and the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO). Swisscontact is assigned to implement the project through technical cooperation in skill training and workforce development combined with support for targeted enterprises and value-added environmental initiatives.

Project activities include: Facilitate the establishment and operation of local Tourism Management Organisations TMOs all over of Flores. These local TMOs will be enabled to coordinate and facilitate internal destination development interventions among tourism stakeholder and communities. With key focus on the branding of Flores as tourism destination, the project will support the development of a regional Destination Management Organisation. This regional DMO will strengthen the external marketing of Flores as well as coordinate and stimulate the regional cooperation between the local Governments and the TMOs on Flores.
