Sustainable Water and Environmental Sanitation

Sustainable Water and Environmental Sanitation

Water supply depends on available water sources, we need to be aware of this and protect not only the source but also the catchment area to keep the water available for all.

Daily life as well as tourism need fresh clean water, and this requires long term efforts.

Keeping forest cover, avoiding changes in the soil through unsustainable land use, and managing water use and drainage of waste water, will contribute to sustainable livelihoods and water availability.

Indonesia is aiming to introduce STBM, Sanitasi Total Berbasis Masyarakat (Community Based Total Sanitation) with a 5 pillar Program

- stop open defecation, ODF (Stop BABS/CLTS)

- hand washing with soap (CTPS)

- household water treatment (PAMRT)

- household waste management (WASTE)

and

- waste water management (DRAINAGE).

In Flores we need to see how the ones who protect and care for water and sanitation can be recognized, so that they continue and improve what they are doing and can in turn be supported by the ones who use it, so environmental services can be created and maintained.

Maintenance and management of water and sanitation does not depend on individuals only, but can only succeed through cooperation based on a joint responsibility.

Joint actions, and communal efforts are a true "one for all, all for one” and need to guarantee that we have a future in Flores and that people from all over the world will enjoy visiting us.

The right to drinking water and sanitation, a recognised human right

In 2010, the United Nations General Assembly (Resolution A/RES/64/292, July 2010) and the Human Rights Council (Resolution A/HRC/15/L.14, September 2010) recognised the right to access drinking water and sanitation as a human right on the same footing as other social rights such as the right to food and the right to health.

Despite this international recognition, there is still much to be done: every ten minutes, ten people including four children die of diseases directly related to water. The time has come for the right to water and sanitation to be put into effect.

World Water Day: 22 March 2012

Coordinated by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

Hundreds of thousands of people celebrated World Water Day "Water and Food Security" on 22 March 2012 and organized or took part in amazing initiatives around the world.

UN-Water, FAO and the World Water Day team thank you for your incredible support and involvement. But it doesn't stop here. The world population is growing, a billion people already live in chronic hunger and water resources are under heavy pressure. Don't give up raising awareness and promoting more sustainable attitudes!

The World Water Day campaign, it's you!
