Ecotourism

Ecotourism is defined as "responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people." (TIES, 1990)

Ecotourism is about uniting conservation, communities, and sustainable travel. This means that those who implement and participate in ecotourism activities should follow the following ecotourism principles:

  • Minimize impact.
  • Build environmental and cultural awareness and respect.
  • Provide positive experiences for both visitors and hosts.
  • Provide direct financial benefits for conservation.
  • Provide financial benefits and empowerment for local people.
  • Raise sensitivity to host countries' political, environmental, and social climate.

Ecotourism and Flores

On Flores, as in the rest of Indonesia, life is centered around three relationships:

- between man and his God;

- between man in his environment;

and

- between man and his fellow man.

All tourism attractions/activities in Flores are centered around those three relationships. All cultural rituals and tradition of old religious practices are also linked to those relationship.

Understanding those three relationship will make a trip to Flores more interesting; it not just a travelling, but an opportunity for a deep-down learning and knowing the great value of Flores.

Ecotourism and diving

Scuba diving is a popular recreational activity practiced all over the world in fresh and salt water bodies, but it can have damaging impacts on delicate aquatic environments. Unfortunately, many scuba divers lack knowledge of the marine ecosystem and environmentally responsible behaviors, which contributes to the ecological degradation of the environment. Raising awareness through education and marketing, scuba divers could be inspired to learn and practice sustainable scuba diving. If divers know how their actions impact the environment, and are motivated to change destructive behaviors, we can effectively mitigate direct and indirect damage to the environment so scuba can be enjoyed by future generations.
